Money
Prices quoted in this country dossier are in US dollars (US$), unless otherwise specified.

Local currency
The monetary unit in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan rupee. For up to date exchange rates with your own currency visitwww.oanda.com or www.xe.com.

Changing money, credit cards & ATMs
ATMs, foreign exchange agencies and banks are not so accessible outside of the bigger cities. It is advisable to carry with you enough hard currency to last you till you are able to make it to another big city. Changing money upon arriving at the airport is a worthy recommendation.

Working out your budget
It is impossible to say exactly what you will need during your tour but hopefully the following will help you work out your budget. Please refer to your tour dossier for full details of what’s included and excluded. Your spending money should cover meals, entrance fees, some souvenirs and drinks etc. For approximate prices of optional excursions, please see the optional excursions guide located on the tour page here. The amount you will actually spend depends on personal taste and budget but we recommend that you bring along more than you think you will need to cover any emergencies or unexpected must-have souvenirs.

Entrance fees
Generally speaking most entrance fees will be covered by the recommended spending money. There are, however, other sites and museums that are not part of the tour programme which you may wish to visit in your free time. If you have an International Student Card you will often be entitled to reduced entrance fees.

Tipping
Although tipping may not be a custom to you at home, locals here depend on your tips as many of them have families and children to support. Tucan Travel aim to support the local community on every tour by staying in locally operated hotels and employing local guides for many excursions. Tips are one of the most important aspects of our contribution to local communities. We encourage you to tip after most optional excursions and your tour leader will be able to advise you on a reasonable amount. Please make sure to allow enough local currency to tip after meals and excursions.

Optional excursions
Most excursions and entrance fees are NOT included in the local payment and you can therefore choose as many or as few optional excursions as you like. A full list of the main excursions available on each tour can be found on our optional excursions guide. All prices given are approximate and are likely to change due to local inflation or exchange rates.

Local transport
On your trip in Sri Lanka we will be travelling on a combination of both private and public transport to give you an insight into the country and how it all works. As the infrastructure is not set up as much in Sri Lanka as other destinations we will travel mostly be private vehicles. Your tour leader will be able to provide advice on this when you stop in major cities.

Security
In any foreign place you should exercise a reasonable degree of caution. Be sensible. Don’t walk around lonely back streets, especially on your own or at night, don’t wear expensive looking jewellery or a classy watch and don’t carry a wallet in your back pocket. Don’t carry your camera openly; always have it in a small day pack which is firmly attached to your body, preferably in the front in crowded places. Take particular care not to become too relaxed if you have had a few drinks and are returning to your hotel at night – it is best to always take a taxi. Always wear a money belt or leave your valuables, including your passport, in the hotel security box. Generally Mongolia is very safe, and most people have no problems at all.

Local food and drink
Good food is found in abundance in Sri Lanka with a wide choice of cuisine to choose from. Rice is the staple meal and is generally consumed with a range of vegetable curries, fish, beef, chicken or egg and a mallum (finely shredded leaves which are lightly stir fried). Vegetarian curries are made from practically every available fruit or vegetable such as brinjals, beans, beetroot, carrot, banana flower, ash plantains, pumpkin etc Curries in Sri Lanka are much hotter than India and should you eat something too hot, the best to eat is plain rice, pasta or noodles, yoghurt or curd or even cucumber. Excellent fresh fish is found in coastal towns with prawns, crab, and lobsters too. Another speciality is the hopper, similar to a bowl shaped pancake which is crisp at the other edges. There are many varieties such as egg hoppers where an egg is poached in the centre. There is also a wide array of fresh exotic fruit to tantalise your taste buds.
